The Wooden Sky
Saturday, February 20, 2010
$15 Tickets
8 pm start

Exclaim! magazine’s top 10 roots/country albums of 2009

Trying to nail down the disparate genres explored by the Wooden Sky isn’t an easy task. When pressed, the band tosses out tags like "folk rock", but the words don’t hint at the nuances in their sound. Since 2003, the Toronto collective has been pushing the limits of folk and country, adding pieces of outside influence and slowly growing their own unique sonic aesthetic. It’s all led them to If I don’t come home you’ll know I’m gone, a massive undertaking that sweeps through rock and roll subgenres with the deftness of the Allman Brothers, the songwriting focus of Wilco, and the experimental sonic cacophony of the Flaming Lips. It’s a career-defining record, grown and built organically over months spent living, writing, and recording in cramped apartments between Toronto and Montreal.

Rankin, Church & Crowe
Sunday, February 21st, 2010
$35 tickets
8 pm start

Friends and colleagues Raylene Rankin, Cindy Church, and Susan Crowe, all award winning recording artists, bring their varied musical signatures to the stage in a mix of elegance and accessibility. Folk, country, jazz, contemporary singer-songwriter are blended with a confident ease that makes for richly textured harmonies and a welcoming rapport that invites audiences in, and makes them want to stay.

Raylene Rankin is best known for her part of the Rankin Family and the Rankin Sisters, but her solo work has long stood apart on its own as solidly creative. She brings an unerring taste to her song choice, and as a writer, has an instinctive ear for what makes a song. These two things alone make for excellence. Add to that her voice, as incomparable as hand-cut crystal - and equally beautiful - you have the first part of this musical triumvirate.

Cindy Church is simply one of the finest singers in Canada today. Over the last few decades, she has cemented her position in Canadian music history with her reputation as a vocalist and a writer. Her work with Quartette, Lunch at Allen’s, and The Nearness of You (the Hoagy Carmichael tribute) illustrates the range of her ability and her musical flexibility. Her honeyed voice, her song writing and her intuitive and creative harmonies add the next component to this combination of talents.

Susan Crowe provides the final angle to complete the equation. She’s described as a writer’s writer, whose eyes and ears never wander far from the lyric. Hers is a graceful, well-designed writing, subtle in its craft and message, and varied in its style. She also brings her voice, unquestionably the darkest of the three, providing a kind of harmonic shade to this musical geometry.

Together they are more than the sum of those parts. They are Rankin, Church and Crowe.

Here's some feedback from musicians who have played at the Old Fire Hall:

"The Old Fire Hall is a unique venue with great staff and a growing following in western BC. I totally enjoyed the gig there" - Harry Manx

"The Old Fire Hall is such a beautiful piece of work .... one of the finest live music venues ever. Great vibe, great food, great people ... way to go" - Lester Quitzau

"Congratulations on having one of the nicest venues in the country" - Brad Turner

"The Old Fire Hall is my favourite club in BC. " - Cory Weeds, Owner of the Cellar Jazz Club

"In the top 3 clubs we've played worldwide" - Mark DeJong and the Outer Bridge Ensemble

"One of the best rooms in the country ... a work of genius" - Garnet Rogers

"I have played in many venues over the course of 16 years and I truly can say that many have offered wonderful acoustics, good hospitality and a friendly promoter but none have quite reached the level to that which Zac Gribble and staff at The Old Firehall offer. A pleasurable sound check was followed by a freshly prepared meal of "seafood stuffed chicken" complete with a open selection of locally brewed beer and boutique wines.... and that was before the show started! The Old Firehall is a beautiful venue but what you can't tell from photos is that every inch of the place, including the staff show a level of pride and attention to detail uncommon in this business. The audience was attentive, the acoustics are great and the hospitality is next to none.... a bit  "off the beaten path"??? .... maybe...... but not for long." - Wil

"It is not all that often that we get to stumble upon a place that is so gorgeous and as well put together as the Old Fire Hall. We can sometimes see 20 venues in a month and sadly places like this are a rarity and a much needed sanctuary for musicians and patrons alike. We were so thrilled to arrive and meet Zac and his staff who were so kind and professional from the start. The kitchen staff were also incredibly kind, making us one the best meals we have had all year. It easily became one of our top five favourite venues and we are delighted to add it to our western canadian touring." - Po' Girl
